Dueling Mr. Noodles

I am a college graduate.

Yup.

Remember this as I relay the following.

On Sesame Street, there is a character, Mr. Noodle. He comes on usually during the Elmo segment at the end when he's demonstrating whatever it is that Elmo is talking about that day. Sometimes, Mr. Noodle's brother, Mr. Noodle, comes on instead of Mr. Noodle. I have always been confused by Mr. Noodle and his brother Mr. Noodle. I never said anything out loud about this, it was always just an inner confusion that I kept to myself.

I would think, Two Mr. Noodles! That's crazy! I'm hearing that wrong! Maybe he's saying something else, like Mr. Noodow. Because why would there be two Mr. Noodles? That's just silly.

And then I would leave it at that. In my head.

Well of course when you have kids, kids' shows come up in conversation quite often when you get the chance to actually talk to other adults. And one day Sesame Street came up, to whence I said, or admitted really, out loud, that I was a complete and total idiot that I was always confused about why there were two Mr. Noodles. Why I continued to say this out loud and why I thought this was a good idea, I just don't know. Sometimes my mouth runs away from my head. Like when I was in high school and it was dark in the classroom while we watched a nature program and I was busy writing a note and not watching the program but looked up briefly to catch a glimpse of what I thought was a worm and yelled, "Ew! A worm!" and the whole class laughed before I realized that the two animals were, er, mating, and it was indeed, not a worm afterall and the jig was up. Everyone knew that not only was I an idiot then, but I was definitely doing something other than watching this educational nature program.

Um. Anyway. I relayed my confusion about the Mr. Noodles. Out loud.

Not realizing that if there was one Mr. Noodle, then that would mean his last name would be "Noodle" and if he had a brother, that it would naturally follow that he, too, would have the same last name of "Noodle" and be referred to also as "Mr. Noodle." That is, of course, if they had the same parents or even if they didn't, if the mom and dad decided to have them keep the same last name.

Which was explained to me in detail by said other adult, which thankfully, was the husband of my very best friend in the world who has known me for a very long time and would not be surprised in the least by my idiocy and I am even less embarrassed being an idiot in front of him than I would be in front of other people I don't know as well. But still.

Of course, blogging this means sharing my complete and utter lunacy with the world, but somehow it's made better by the fact that you can't see my red face of embarrassment from your computer.

I wish I could say my "mommy moments" (as I like to call them) are few and far between and that I don't worry about the education of my children, but alas, I am forgetful, I get lost a lot, and I can't remember where I placed my brain nearly half the time and I get confused easily by things like two Mr. Noodles on Sesame Street.

  1. I know the feeling--too many episodes of Blues Clues and I start to wonder where my brain went.

  2. LOL Speaking of blues clues - imagine the trauma my kids went through when they had Steve and then Joe. Well THEN we moved to England and here we have Kevin. Forget 2 Mr. Noodles - how does Blue have 3 different owners?

  3. You are cracking me up!

Well, I don't know, though - I mean, really, couldn't they have done better than calling them both that, even if yah, it's technically right (OK, maybe they meant it to be cute/funny - I haven't seen it, so what do I know?)? I mean, if there were two Mr. Smiths in the room where I was, I'd probably go with Mike and Bob, or whatever pet names for their, um, worms :)

I loved the way you told this, though. Awesome.
