Merry Christmas!!!

Merry Christmas everyone!!

Santa came to our house already, wolfed down a bunch of shortbread cookies we made for him (he's got quite an appetite!) and skedaddled before we could even get a chance to say hello! But he left behind a train table and a whole bunch of Thomas goodies and I am exploding waiting for the boys to wake up to that. Hopefully not before 5 a.m. We're gonna have the hardest time getting them out the door to my mom's for Christmas dinner.

Here's a Santa Claus fun fact. Did you know that in the stories Santa was only a miniature sized elf until the '30's when Coca-Cola made him human-sized in their ads? How's that for marketing's effect on oh, the entire world! I learned that on that cable holiday-song channel where they flash fun facts up there.

So I baked my butt off for the 2008 Holiday Bakeoff that my family is doing instead of gifts. I made mini loaves of gingerbread cake, shortbread cookies (ya gotta try these recipes! They're amazing!! I linked em!), and superduperchocolatey cupcakes shaped like snowmen. Some of the shortbreads I took the liberty of melting chocolate and drizzling it over them and I did cut-outs too with my tiny Christmas cookie cutters (my favorite was a cute little snowflake.) I put 'em in a basket along with candy and other goodies and I'll have to take a picture of them before they get devoured. I found that sky was totally the limit for what I could do with the bakeoff and it was really tough trying to stop myself from adding more and more and more and more. I lined the basket with "snow" and wrapped all the goodies individually with cellophane (there's some really pretty cellophane out there these days!!) One basket I added in a bottle of wine, another a cute book, another I filled a couple of camoflauged tins full of candy and put those in (for the Marine), it was really easy to just keep going. I'm not sure if I really saved that much money on gifts to be honest, but it was really fun baking and I can't wait to see what everyone else came up with.

I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and happy Holidays all around whatever you may celebrate!

  4. I wondered that about Santa since in Twas the Night Before Christmas he's referred to as an elf and the reindeer are referred to as "tiny."
