Tale of a Non-runner's Run

7:30 p.m. A long day was had.
A day at Busch Gardens with the kids.
Hot. Dry. Sweaty.

Spaghetti for dinner. Again.
I'm not very creative these days.
Long run in the cards.
3 1/2 miles.

Not long for most.
Long for me.
Longest so far, in fact.
Because I'm not really a runner.

The sun starts to fall.
I lace up the kicks.
Just me and my Ipod.
Get moving.

One lap's a half mile.
And the first lap stinks.
Every time.
Must. Keep. Going.

Breathing hard.
Feet hit the pavement.
Help me out here, music.
Huge hill.

One lap done.
Feeling strong.
My necklace whispers,

Face is hot.
Legs burn.
One mile done.
4 1/2 laps to go.

Easier now. Wave at the neighbors.
Feeling good.
Rounding corner. 4 laps done.
2 miles.

Have to change pants.
Wish it were sweat.
But it's not.
Hate that.

Head in the house,
almost head out.
Baby wakes up.
Gotta stay.

Get him to sleep. Two laps to go.
One. more. mile.
Must. Keep. Going.

Finish the mile.
Strong and fast.
Feeling good.
Not bad for a non-runner.

Still it looms.
It wasn't straight.
Does it count?
Wish it did.

Next Sunday,
We'll meet again.
For this long run.

3 1/2 miles.
This time straight.
Just you and me.
The non-runner.

  1. treat the first lap like the last one, goes much better

  2. A non-runner becoming a runner kind of (but not entirely) against her will. ;) Love it, and I think you are awesome.

  3. Love it! You can do it, I know you can :)

  4. I love it!!! I too have had to stop to feed, change, or put the baby to sleep!! Great Job!

Talk to me, Goose!
