On Mental Toughness: TRI, DON'T QUIT

Lightbulb moment of the week: "The more I do it, the less I'll dread it and the less I dread it, the more I'll do it!"- Me on "fear"

thepier
The rainy, gray day I met at the pier for our practice swim. And ps. the swim is from where I was standing, down past the end of that pier, then around a buoy to the left, for a while, then back to shore.
* * *

Yesterday I learned that it doesn't matter what level or age you are.

You can still panic.

Like the lady standing next to me just after making a second trip out and around the buoys. Yes, that ripped lady, at least 15 years older than me with a 1/2 Ironman under her belt, even she fell victim to panic.

Yesterday it was raining. It was a practice in the water where we'll be swimming for the St. Anthony's Triathlon next weekend. Before the swim, I kept my cool. I turned my emotions off. I didn't think about the fact that I was cold or that there was seaweed and dead fish along the beach. I didn't think about anything, except, "Can I do this?"

Usually the voice answers back, "Yes." Yesterday it was wishywashy and intimidated and defeated-sounding and it said, "I don't know."  I ignored it.

I got into the water and started "practice" swimming and then the voice was back again sending that inevitable question to enter my mind. "WHAT THE HELL am I doing???????"

The voice proceeds to tell me I'm crazy. It wonders why I am subjecting myself to this lunacy. And it tells me to flag down the nearest kayak to pluck me out of the water so we can just go home already.

But I kept going. I stopped a couple of times, I got used to the water, I bobbed, I flipped on my back, I caught my breath, I kept moving for the most part. I was one of the very last out of the water. We were going in again.

This time we all ran into the water, like we will on race day. The voice was back again. I couldn't ever shake the panic for the entire swim, and again I stopped a few times. I made it around the buoys and went back to shore. We were done.

I only swam about half of what we'll be swimming next week.

Which means that if I don't get my head on straight, I'm toast.

There were a few people like me, like Ironlady, whose nerves got the better of them. And I put my goggles on to stop myself from crying in front of the 99 other triathletes at the practice swim.

What is this? Is it fear? Is it the depth? Is it seeing the length of the swim spread out before me that overwhelms me? Is it the feeling of not being in control, like I am on land? Was it the murk? Because you all know how I feel about the murk...and there was a degree of murk going on.

And if I can't figure out what it is, how will I fix it?

When I was leaving, I thought to myself, the only solution is to do it more. Because the more I do it, the less I'll dread it and the less I dread it, the more I'll do it!

Funny how that works, isn't it?

tridontquit_edited-1

This week I'm calling it "Tri, Don't Quit" week and I'm filling up my blog with my motivations to get me through Sunday.

And also, I'm going to be making some mental and physical changes this week and from here on out. Like for instance:

  • I'm going on a beer and wine FAST. Unfortunately  That doesn't mean quickly drinking beer and wine. It means no drinking. Until the weekend of June 6th. Which is the weekend of the Team In Training half marathon and I'm only drinking after the race, not before. Which will be very difficult because I'll be with sisters from the Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans, and well, we like to have our fun. But I see not drinking as a training state of mind. It's like shaving my head. Only without the clippers. And the bald head.
  • Working on my inner voice, making her a positive inner voice (maybe even giving her a name. Suggestions welcome. And we can't call her "bitch" cause remember, it's actually me.) And just so you know, as I typed the word "name," just now, what came out on the computer first was "man" as in "giving her a 'man'" which was either a total Freudian slip or a mild case of dyslexia. (Maybe she's trying to tell me something here...) But I will not give her permission to speak unless she's going to say something nice. Or she goes in time out. I may even make her say, "Permission to speak, Ma'am!"
  • I'm going to schedule and log my workouts on actual paper, in a notebook. Instead of just logging the times on Daily Mile. Which has been helpful, but only partial. I need to dig a little deeper here.
  • I'm going to have clearer goals for swimming, for instance, 1 or 2 swim workouts in the ocean per week and only one in the pool and that's for intervals. I need to do swim intervals. They've improved my running immensely, the swim coach I spoke to today said the same goes for swimming. So more ocean swimming. Because the more I do it, the less I'll dread it and the less I dread it, the more I'll do it! See how that works?

I'm going to write down all the snippets of all I read and hear that will help me stay positive through this week and put it here. I hope I don't bore you too much. But I gotta stay focused. And that's what this week's Monday Project is about, coincidentally, so you can join the fun this week! (The link goes live around 1pm EST so come back here to check it out.) All words of wisdom welcome here.

The Monday Project: Incorporating Healthiness

The Monday Project

Well, we've done a lot of things different this past week in our house. And it all started with this:
DSC_0179
I made a "birthday cake" for my son out of Jell-O Jigglers.

And it was a hit!

I just put some foil down on a platter, used cookie cutters for the Jell-O, sprayed light whipped cream around the edges, and voila! Perfect for family of four! Now, if it's a party situation, you might have to spell out a narrative or something, but what we did was perfect for our intimate little gathering of just us. And just so you know, a candle does sit in a pile of whipped cream ok, but you gotta be quick about it!
I did this because we had a birthday cake for him at his bigboy party the day before and honestly, we did not need any more cake in our lives. And might I say, I could actually get used to the Jell-O Jiggler substitution, they loved it (almost) more than they loved the birthday cake!
DSC_0183

After Monday's Jell-O celebration, we moved on to lots of veggies on the side, zero fast-food and healthy snacks, more water and milk, less juice. We are also moving toward a more zenful house entirely, less Star Wars (a whole 'nother post entirely!), less tv in general, more games, reading, projects and together time and a little more unplugging on behalf of Mommy.

What did you do?? Link up over at the Sisterhood with last week's Monday Project! And ps. I shared one of the healthy recipes I made last week, Confetti Couscous, it's delish! Go check it out!

The Monday Project: Fill In the Blank

The Monday Project

This week's Monday Project over at the Sisterhood was to fill in the blank. Take whatever activity you do and fill in the blank with why you do it.

I have a few activities. So I'll fill in a few blanks.

I run... because I can. I run because I like the feeling of flying, even if it is only at 5 miles an hour. I run because I like the wind in my face. I run because I like to dance and when my IPod's all the way up, it makes me feel like I'm dancing. I run because my legs let me and I don't want to say no to anything they can do. I run because my metabolism hates me and running tells it to shut up. I bike because it makes my quads feel like machinery. I bike because I like speed. I bike because I like to feel in control. I bike because it gives me power. I bike because of the cute jerseys and matching equipment. I bike because I want to be badass like my husband. I bike because I was afraid of it and now I'm not. I swim because I like to glide. I swim because it's easy on my legs and it's like taking a break but not. I swim because all the other triathletes do it, and if I want to be one of them, I have to swim. I swim so as to not drown. I swim because I like to frolic in the water when I'm done.

I tri because one day I didn't believe in myself. And then one day I did.

* * *

So what about you?? Why do you do what you do?? Tell me in the comments below or link up your post over at the Sisterhood! Ps. I realized after I was ready to hit 'publish' that throughout that whole thing I never once said to lose weight. Interesting.

More from Fitbloggin + a Post Fitbloggin (David Grotto) Giveaway

Look at that group! That's pretty much all of the bloggers who went to Fitbloggin 10. Awesome.

The key note speaker when Fitbloggin wrapped up was David Grotto, nutritionist extraordinaire, speaker, tv and radio personality, spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association (the list goes on!) and finally, author. He's hilarious, he's got a gigantic personality and he makes nutrition fun.

Case in point: his version of WTF is "where's the fiber?"

In one week from now, our Monday Project at the Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans will be to read a healthy book or a book about nutrition or cooking or fitness or something health-related. (I know, what am I doing spilling the beans already?!) I will be reading this book:
101Foods
101 Foods That Could Save Your Life, by David Grotto. I've heard of it before and I've been wanting to read it for a while. Since he was a guest speaker there, I got one and I got it signed! But the cool part is I have a signed copy to also give away!

  • So. Just leave me a comment telling me if you've ever heard of this book or David Grotto!
  • Become a fan of my Facebook page about my event Christie On a Treadmill at the Mall - which is this Saturday already! Whoa! (Raising money for Team Shrinking Jeans for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training!)
  • You can tweet it for an extra entry.
  • You can get up to three entries but you must leave a separate comment for each entry.
  • The contest closes at Wednesday night at midnight EDT so I can ship it out Thursday and get it to you by next week in time for the Monday Project!
If you're not doing the Monday Project, that's ok, it's still a pretty great book (or at least I'll be sure of that next week after I read it!) If you don't know what the Monday Project is, I write up a post at The Sisterhood with a project, you get all week to do it, then you link up your post on Friday so we can all come by and read it. (In fact, you can see what this week's Monday Project is HERE.) Anyway, leave me a comment, random winner gets the book and we can compare notes after we've read it next week! Have a great week!

Playing Catch-Up With The Monday Project

The Monday Project

So I want you to know that even though I missed posting about one of my Monday Projects, I did actually do it! The week I missed was "Doing Something Different," where we were supposed to venture outside of our comfort zones to do something, well, different. Something we've never tried before. Ever.

I don't know why this was so hard for me but it totally was!

You see, there is a machine.

A machine at the gym that has always intimidated me. I've always thought it was for the hardcore. The buff. The already-fit. The not-me's. And I don't know about you, but I approach a new gym machine sort of like a cat sniffing out a new type of wet food in his dish.

I notice it from afar.

I long to go to it, and eventually I do, but I am unsteady and unsure-like and untrusting.

I eventually head over there and I circle it. Pretend not to care.

Pretend I know exactly what I'm doing and where I'm going while scoping out the directions of the machine without the knowledge of onlookers. Sneaking a peak here and there and eventually putting it together in my head.

Because actually setting up the machine means commitment. By that time, it's do or die. So you have to scope it first before you commit. Because once you've committed, you must start working out on it or you look silly setting it up and leaving. Unless of course you've carried your phone with you and you're pretending you missed a really important call and you totally have to return it. Or you pretend you've forgotten something really important in the locker room and make that "hit your forehead, duh!" move and you rush away as if it must be done right.now. Not that I've done any of this.

And you all do know, of course, that no one in this world in the gym environment is actually paying attention to you, right? No one cares! And I know this. But it feels as if everyone in this world in the gym is watching you like they've announced over the P.A. that Christie is about to try a new piece of gym equipment. But they're totally not! And no one cares. Just so you know.

Anyway, back to the machine.

Bet you're wondering right now which one it is, huh?

I have looked at this machine from afar since college and if you're into math, that's about 12 years. I even took my husband to the gym once to help me and we stood around it and looked and he made some hypothesis about how to work it and really he was no help at all and we walked away. I was so disappointed. Dudes are supposed to know these things. (Sorry, honey, for calling you out on it.)

Here it is: the assisted pull-up machine.

freemotion_GZFI8125

After days of circling this machine and having it cackle at me from across the room (nemesis!!), I finally went over to one of the trainers and asked him how to use it.

Novel idea, huh?

He tells me, you take your weight, you subtract about 30 from it and you put the pin in that weight in the machine. So, if you're 150 pounds, you subtract 30, then you put the pin in the 120 lb weight on the machine. I needed to subtract a little more, but whatever. I finally went over to it and did it (and it kicked my butt in a good way!) But I'm excited now I can finally do this stupid thing without feeling entirely stupid! I still feel like everyone is staring at me and that I need practice looking "cool" on it, but still. I did it and I won.

The end. If not for this project, it would totally still be cackling at me.

I Thought We Had a Deal With The Squirrels

The Monday Project

This week's Monday Project was all about the "bank." Whatever happens when you get out there in your workouts and your training goes directly into the bank and you can use it and draw from it forevermore.

Training in the cold? Bank. Running in the rain? Bank. (And also 100% badass.) It's more than about burning calories. It's about building experiences. It prepares you for any adversities you may face in future training, exercises or on race day.

And boy did I add to my bank this week.
bikerepairshop
Here's my first bank.  I'm up there on the left with the baby blue bike jersey on. That bike that's upside down is mine.

Before I tell you what I'm doing here, here's a little backstory.

Over the weekend, I rode with my tri-group. We rode 13 miles and after that, I ran 4. (Lots for the bank!) As I was on the last 1/2 mile of my ride and almost to the car, on top of a bridge, I got a flat. I wasn't sure it was flat, but my tire sounded all funny and I coasted to my car where I discovered it was indeed flat. Good thing I made it to the car! I brought my bike home and changed the tire the night before the ride pictured above.

So during the ride in the picture, I didn't have a spare tube with me because I used it for my previous flat.

I also didn't know how to use my little cartridge thingy that blows air into the tire. But about 3 miles into this ride on Wednesday, I blew another flat (I'm good luck to have on a ride!) So there we were, sidelined as one of the girls who was like somone on a Nascar pit crew worked her magic on my bike (I borrowed a tube and some air from someone.) I found the culprit, a piece of glass in my tire, pulled it out, we got on our bikes and continued on.

About two miles later, we were slowing down near an intersection and a squirrel, as if out of nowhere, comes barreling into my bike.

I feel his fur on my leg, I start screaming, "WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON TODAYYYYY!!!!!" and my eyes are looking up and straight ahead because I'm afraid to look down and see what hath transpired and eventually I sense that the incident is over and I stop and with my eyes closed say, "I don't want to look, tell me what's down there." Because all I can think is that there is squirrel carnage and I'm scared and feel like I'm going to throw up.

That fur on my leg really freaked me out.

The girls tell me he went up and around my back tire, flew out and ran off. Oh thank God. I can't imagine what would have happened to my psyche had he not made it. And also if I had to clean up squirrel carnage. I would have had nightmares.

So I was a little shaken up and grossed out and kept feeling the phantom fur on my leg and thought maybe this ride wasn't for me and that no one was going to want to ride with me again. But we kept on.

Big, big, bank.

In hindsight and on a serious note, thank God I was able to think clearly during squirrel incident and just sort of stop pedaling and coast to a stop, because I could have had a serious crash if I had freaked out even just a little more. Thank God it was also not while we were flying down the trail, but when we were coasting to a stop.

Don't these squirrels look both ways before crossing?

All I can think of is that episode of Seinfeld where George hit the squirrel by accident and thought they had a deal: they see him coming, they move out of the way. Kind of like the pigeons, when he ran through them and trampled them (they were supposed to move, as per "the deal.")

On the way back from that ride, I heard squirrels chirping in the trees above me.

I know they were talking about me.

I could just feel it.

This week I've learned the following lessons:
-How to change a tire
-That I must learn how to use specific tire-changing equipment if I'm to change a tire or at least have someone with me who knows this very valuable information, as in this instance
-How to handle my life if I am hit by a squirrel (it was not the other way around)

We kept on and rode 17 miles that day.

So I can add that to my bank.

How bout you? What did you add this week? Link up with the other Monday Projects here!

I ROCK

Rethink Your Shrink, The Monday Project

Yes I do. For this week's Monday Project, I challenged us at the Sisterhood to come up with 5 ways that we rock.

I was actually surprised at how hard this was. I must've looked at the computer screen for 20 minutes before I actually started typing something. And even then, I deleted and typed and deleted again. But thankfully I was able to come up with something, and mine are here. And I'm going to follow Brooke's lead here, and ask you, whether or not you're a sister at Shrinking Jeans or not, to tell me, how do you rock?

Go ahead, toot your own horn! Because you rock. You know you do.

Hanging In There

Short and sweet today -- I am about to go on a cleaning frenzy like never before.

So that my house will be like it was before the spores entered it.

Sterilized. Disinfected. The totally aired out, windows open kind. With steam cleaning on the floors and carpets. The whole shabang. Even though I still feel like the crap. But the kids are better and they're in school and I have a window and it is small.

But last night, I spruced up my Wall of Motivation and I posted it over at my SJ Blog, so go take a look at it! And if you haven't joined The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans yet (first, why not!), we are doing a project this week and it's all about the Wall of Motivation, so check it out!
Happy Friday!

The Me Project

Rethink Your Shrink, The Monday Project

Last Monday, we started something fittingly called "The Monday Project" at The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans. (I've heard some sisters calling it "homework" but I'd like to refer to it as a project... haha!) Anyhoo. It's part of the new "Rethink Your Shrink" challenge where I am challenging everyone to get all introspective on themselves, recognize patterns and obstacles to living a healthy lifestyle, and henceforth go forward to grab life by the, um, HORNS.

We link up our projects on Fridays and can I just say, what an amazing experience this has been so far!

If you want to read a little more about the project, click here. And if you want to read my story, click here.

Have a great weekend everyone! If you want to participate, it's never too late! You can still link up your story at the Sisterhood! And yep! There will be a new project on Monday!
