Self-Folding Laundry

How do you get your laundry to fold itself?

First, you get a couple of gorgeous ruby red front loaders that sing songs when you turn them on "The hills are aliiiiiiiive......"

And when you turn them off you get a beautiful chime rather than a loud, angry BUZZZZ! that wakes up the whole house during naptime.

Then you spend what feels like a gajillion years doing things like painting and spackling and sanding to make a nice home for them. But because you've been skeeved out by this room since you moved in and because of it, you don't want to spend more than 30 seconds in there doing anything much less a chore you already hate (like folding laundry), you're more than willing to do it anything it takes to fix it. Plus, the ruby red twins don't deserve to be in a room anything less than regal.

Then you get a really really cool table that hangs on the wall that you can fold up, from IKEA the megasuperstore of my dreams. $30 by the way.

It's supposed to be a table for two for a studio apartment or something. But it's not. It's a laundry folding table. Because it does this:

Oooooooh! Ahhhhhh!

So here it is. What I've (and by I, I mean me, my husband and dad) been slaving away on for the past 5 days, the official before and after:

What do you think???

Laundry yesterday was a dream. Can't wait to do it again.

See that yellow closet up there? That was the scariest part of all. It used to house a water heater. Before that, the dryer used to pump its air through there too. So there was a big hole in the wall covered up by a bunch of plywood and the walls were all unpainted and gross. So my dad and husband took everything out, made a little passageway to pump the dryer through to the garage, built a little shelf so the catbox could go under it, and all my utility stuff (vaccuum, broom, mop, etc.) could go above it. Weee! Cost? Labor plus wood plus the silver ducts that look like robot arms.

I was lying when I said you needed the front loaders for the laundry makeover, by the way. I wish I had done this sooner. All we did was spackle, put on a coat of paint, put up some shelves, that table and a couple of rugs and a curtain with tiny rod instead of that big ugly door. I would say less than $200!!!! Even with my not-so-pretty, purely functional normal white washer and dryer, I should have done this eons ago!

And now, my laundry all but folds itself! Off to do some laundry now...

Friday

Plant E.R.

It was touch and go this afternoon.

Last weekend I added three plants to my new patio. One more hanging basket and two potted plants. They're really pretty and flowery and lovely.

Last night, I passed by the new hangy one and the flowers were so big and beautiful that I actually would've described the plant as "meaty". It was full of meaty leaves.

This morning, all the meaty leaves were sad. Not meaty.

What happened between last night and this morning, you ask? I'll tell you what happened. I moved it two feet yesterday and the sun dried it out in two seconds. You see how quickly this happens? If you're not watching, your brown thumb comes out and your plants die. But don't worry, I watered them and two hours later, the flowers perked up like they were thanking me. It was almost odd, come to think of it. Almost like they're alive or something...

Then, one of my hanging baskets took a turn for the worse. It was literally like "Plant E.R." going on at my house.

I had put the plant in the basket with the soil it came in (fyi: big mistake. big.), and every time I would water it, the water would go straight out of the basket and after a while of this happening, it occurred to me that maybe it wasn't getting watered.

I acknowledged this out loud, saying something about the poor plant looking sad, and of course Poops, who was playing "gardener" with me, heard me.

And he looked at me sincerely, with big eyes and asked, "Who made him sad, Mommy?"

Aye-aye-aye.

Yes. Of course it was me. I admitted it to him too. I told him. "Mommy did honey, but I am going to fix it, I promise." And I climbed that ladder, took the plant down, added some food and some new potting soil, and within hours, the hanging basket? Still a basket. Not a casket.

I'm proud.

Lives are being saved here.

Tragedies averted.

I'm getting good at this.

My brown thumb is getting a shade (or two) lighter.

I may have a future in gardening.

(OK maybe not.) But at least my plants have a future, right?

For now, anyway.

In the meantime, I'm thinking I might need this:

A water globe. Just in case. It waters things for you.

It's like plant water insurance.

For people who have a problem watering their plants. Like me.

It's like a plant respirator if you think about it. It kind of keeps the plant alive for you. Hmm. Except then you have to remember to fill the globe, right? So really it's kind of the same thing.

It does look kind of cool though. And from way up high, no one would see it really. You know, in the hangy plant thing. I'm spending too much time thinking about the water globe. Maybe I could just adopt the motto: "In the time it takes for you to complain about your dead plants, you could have just watered them." So I'm just going to save myself 10 bucks and water them myself. You know, and be a role model. Cause really, it's about the kids.

Ta-Da!!!!

So, we did it! We're done!! That's me and my dad on my fresh new patio! It only took about 8 hours! (Well, not counting the prep work and the transport...) We used the portage stone and river rock, and right up there in the top left, you can see my hanging basket is still alive and kicking.

Here's the official before and after:

YAY!! I just can't wait to fill it all up with beautiful new plants and flowers and a fountain and all sorts of goodies. Weeeeeeeeeee! I'm so excited I could piddle. So, what do you think?

Project Nastiness in the PM

I like to build things and I like to make things. And it always starts out with those four little words in my head: "Oh, that'll be easy!" And probably only about 10% of the time does it really turn out to actually be easy.
Well it was 9:30 at night and we finally obtained the stones for the little patio that my dad and I are putting in Friday. 56 of these little babies. Turns out the stones weighed just a tad bit more than we thought, and hauling them in the back of the Cherokee just wasn't gonna cut it.
Because we had this too....
River rock and leveling sand. And all of it together weighed, oh, 23 HUNDRED pounds. That's 2,300 pounds. Two THOUSAND three hundred pounds.
So it turned out that we needed this:

And after a long day at work (which he is up to his eyeballs in), my husband really really loved this. (With the kids in the shopping cart after their bedtime and after realizing we forgot our insurance cards which we need to rent vehicles and having to run back home...)

So hopefully the next time I blog, it will be with pictures of my brand new little patio. (Except there's a tornado watch and a huge storm front moving in. Because why wouldn't it.)

Ahhh, good times.

Project Nastiness

I'd like to think that we all have some unfinished project lingering around our house that we are least proud of. It makes me feel better to think it's not just me. Even if it is.

Mine is in my very front yard.

Right out in the open. For alllll to see. Ok, it does hide behind a wall, if that counts, but it's right there out in the open for anyone who comes to the front door, friends, family, (solicitors...). It's right next to the hanging caskets. (Which are still "baskets" by the way. Half thanks to mother nature who watered them for me when they were starting to look a little sad.)

Oh yes, anyway, back to my little section of nastiness. It's a catastrophe. A calamity. A total and utter embarrassment.

It's my courtyard and it looked like this:
Until yesterday. Oh isn't it terrible? All that craziness? Yep. Weeds. It takes a complete crazy person to admit this (via picture) out loud on a blog.

And by the way can I just say that it's amazing once you start something how little time it actually takes to work on if you just move your lazy bum (a metaphor for life, maybe?).
So Poops helped me clear it all out. Well actually he did some digging and found a worm which was superexciting (despite the panic that set in when he almost squeezed it just a little too tight -- but he's ok. The worm, that is. In case you were wondering).

But 6 giant leaf garbage bags later this is what we ended up with:

So on to the next step. Which is going to be the best step: putting down a little stone patio and putting some more victims pretty flowers and plants and even a water fountain. I have a picture in my head of two chairs (or a bench), a tiny table, a fountain, flowers and pure serenity. I am hoping that the longest process was the preparation, like in most home improvement projects or potty training (and by the way, any word on how long this lasts? Because we're still not there yet.) Anyhoo we're gonna hop to it this weekend or tomorrow. We're picking up all the stones tonight. But step one of "project nastiness" is officially complete. On to phase two!
