Things That I've Found Myself Doing This Week

This 21 Day Challenge at the Sisterhood is awesome and I'll tell you why. My goal was to eat clean and as I go through day 3, I'm finding out I have lots of naughty naughty habits, even if they don't add up calorie-wise to over the limit, they're still not really healthy habits!

Like for instance, I mindlessly eat. Who knew?!

Because eating clean, for me, means no unnecessary snacks and eating whole foods when I'm hungry and only when I'm hungry so I am listening to my body. So imagine my surprise when I'm wandering around the mall after getting the birthday gift I went in to buy and I pass Auntie Anne's and their pretzel sticks, which completely fit into my points regimen with Weight Watchers, but not into the "eating clean" category. See, I wasn't hungry. But it was there. And I totally would have gotten them on any other day, for absolutely no reason.

So goes, too, with Starbucks. I didn't need the coffee or the caffeine, but it was there.

After wandering around the mall for a few minutes and having nothing to do and wanting to just sit down and have coffee or pretzels and stare off into space, I decided I would take the yummy, cleansing, white tea I bought and just go home because there was nothing left to do at the mall besides eat or drink something. Sure, eating those things would not have been that big of a deal, but the reason why I would have been eating them was really sort of interesting to me, because it wasn't out of hunger, it was entirely out of boredom.

Tonight is date night and normally I would have configured my points to include some yummy (bad) dinner with my husband. And bad to only a certain degree, because my version of "bad" now is so much better than it used to be, i.e. we no longer go all the way with the liquory coffees and desserts and the whole shabang like we used to.

But since I'm committed to my version of clean eating (and I say "my version" because I don't know if it fits in with whatever anyone else's idea of clean eating is, it is just mine and cleaning up my personal patterns and habits) instead of eating out, we're eating at home (wow!) and then we're going to the gym to play racquetball and swim (wow again!)

Now, normally after that, we'd go to Buffalo Wild Wings afterward because it is literally in the parking lot of the gym and normally I would have had beer (within my alotted points) but I have also given up alcohol for a few months, so if we do go, I will drink water and probably not eat anything unless I am actually hungry. And if I am hungry, naked grilled chicken tenders it is! It sounds really super boring, but the activities are not, they're super fun, I'm just trying to fill up my life with fun instead of food and trying not to look at my life as boring if it's not centered around food. Because we think about food all the time and how it spices life up so much! Why do we do that? I don't know. I do it, but I don't know why.

The thing is too, I've found that by stopping all this mindless snacking, I'm adding more whole foods to my meals so I'm not too hungry in between. And I've got apples and fruit and probiotic yogurt and whole wheat tortillas or tea and lots of other yummies to snack on if I'm starving. And that's another thing, I'm finding myself turning back to tea, I'm trying new things to try (today was a new guacamole recipe because I want my kids to try avocado!) And by making sure that what I'm doing is not food-centered (bored eating at the mall, sports night as a date night), it's almost completely taking the importance out of food and it's making me view it as fuel instead. And purely functional.

I am wearing my "discipline" necklace to help me along, because when all is said and done, it's really not easy for me to change behaviors especially ones I didn't realize really existed! And especially as I get Happy Meals for the kids (I know, I know, hypocritical mom here!)  I'm doing this because as I continue to train for the half-marathon and the couple of sprint triathlons I'm doing this summer, I want to think like I'm training. I wouldn't half-ass a training run or ride or swim, so I don't want to half-ass my eating either. And I want to see what happens if I am truly, truly serious. Will this stick after 21 days? Will I make it to day 22 and shovel my face with Tijuana Flats? Will I have cravings? How will I fill them? These are all things I want to know! If you have a habit you want to change, join me in this 21 day challenge, it really is interesting and fun! And it's not too late, either! You can read more about it here.

More from Fitbloggin + a Post Fitbloggin (David Grotto) Giveaway

Look at that group! That's pretty much all of the bloggers who went to Fitbloggin 10. Awesome.

The key note speaker when Fitbloggin wrapped up was David Grotto, nutritionist extraordinaire, speaker, tv and radio personality, spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association (the list goes on!) and finally, author. He's hilarious, he's got a gigantic personality and he makes nutrition fun.

Case in point: his version of WTF is "where's the fiber?"

In one week from now, our Monday Project at the Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans will be to read a healthy book or a book about nutrition or cooking or fitness or something health-related. (I know, what am I doing spilling the beans already?!) I will be reading this book:
101Foods
101 Foods That Could Save Your Life, by David Grotto. I've heard of it before and I've been wanting to read it for a while. Since he was a guest speaker there, I got one and I got it signed! But the cool part is I have a signed copy to also give away!

  • So. Just leave me a comment telling me if you've ever heard of this book or David Grotto!
  • Become a fan of my Facebook page about my event Christie On a Treadmill at the Mall - which is this Saturday already! Whoa! (Raising money for Team Shrinking Jeans for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training!)
  • You can tweet it for an extra entry.
  • You can get up to three entries but you must leave a separate comment for each entry.
  • The contest closes at Wednesday night at midnight EDT so I can ship it out Thursday and get it to you by next week in time for the Monday Project!
If you're not doing the Monday Project, that's ok, it's still a pretty great book (or at least I'll be sure of that next week after I read it!) If you don't know what the Monday Project is, I write up a post at The Sisterhood with a project, you get all week to do it, then you link up your post on Friday so we can all come by and read it. (In fact, you can see what this week's Monday Project is HERE.) Anyway, leave me a comment, random winner gets the book and we can compare notes after we've read it next week! Have a great week!

Weigh-In Wednesday and A Happy St. Patty's Day!

DSC_1230
Happy St. Patty's Day!!! I'm not Irish, but my last name says I am!!! So I'm going with that...

We woke up and we had some green milk and some green eggbeaters (yum!) so we're in the spirit!

And I was totally stoked when I woke up because I was just planning on maintaining this week. But noooooo! I lost anyway!! Despite missing two workouts because the little boy was sick and eating only kind of half ok and definitely not counting points because we went to Disney last week.

I lost 2 POUNDS!

Woohoo! Thank you, body, for not listening to my diet and workout last week. I'll be good to you this coming week, I promise.

I'm sure you've seen our great big party at the Sisterhood by now, right??
Team Shrinking Jeans Bash

If ever there was a time to get something for giving, this is it! We're giving away dozens of prizes and hundreds of dollars (yes, real cash!) for your donation. Plus, every penny that goes to our team, helps ME get off the treadmill FASTER when I go for my "Christie On a Treadmill at the Mall" fundraiser one week from Saturday. I will be on that thing from the time my mall opens to the time it closes or until I raise $2,000! So not only will you be saving me, you could win something HUGE, not to mention the great feeling that you will come away with from helping to stamp out a horrible disease which so many of us have been touched by. So what do you say... You can donate to Team Shrinking Jeans right HERE. And take a look at all the prizes here!

Have a great St. Patty's day! I am sending you all a virtual green (light) beer! Don't forget to visit all the other sisters at the Sisterhood today and support them on their journeys! Want to join us? Head on over -- it's never too late!!

Weigh-In Wednesday: Team G

I love our team!! G4: GROOVY GIRLS GETTIN' GOIN!
GROOVY_edited-2
Our team is one week strong and already it's been such a wonderful support network, I love it. I needed this. (It's not too late to get on a team for the Sisterhood Spring Fling!)

So my week, in a nutshell, was mixed. I worked out great. I ate like crap. Until I looked into the virtual faces of all my dear sisters and decided I would eat crap no more. I would do this, finally, for myself, and for my team. Because I owe myself that much and I owe them that much too.

I started counting points again on Monday.

I have lost one pound. If I had counted points last week like a good girl, I would have lost more. Because I did add up all my activity points, and I earned more than 40! More than 40 activity points!!!!!! Now, you may not know Weight Watchers, but I get to eat 23 points a day. They give you an alloted extra 30 to spread out through the week and then if you earn activity points, you can eat those too. So I could theoretically get 40 extra points per week doing what I'm doing??

Yeah. I'm gonna be ok here.

How did you do???

Raffle Winner and More About My Crazy Stunt

I cannot even believe that you all have helped me raise almost $650 already!!!! I am so overwhelmed and amazed!!

Thank you SO.MUCH!

I told you that I have a crazy fundraiser planned and I am finally going to unveil it here. On March, 27th, I am going to run on a treadmill. IN MY MALL. For all to see. Complete with velvet rope. For hours upon hours. From the time the mall opens, until it closes, or until I meet my fundraising goal, whichever comes first. I will be vlogging it. I will be blogging it. I will be Facebooking it. I will be Tweeting it. Because I will need A LOT of distractions to help me through this one!!!

The wonderful people at Westfield Mall are allowing me run and I will be holding raffles the whole time also so there will be prizes! Woot! I am so excited and nervous about embarrassing myself in this manner. !!

I know that most of you are not in Florida and that is ok, but please watch out in one month for all my Tweets and updates as I will need your blogging-tweeting love whilst this is going on to keep me going.

Also, if you haven't noticed the poll up in my top left sidebar, I'm letting YOU vote for what I shall do on race day. So please vote! I think tutu and tattoo are tied! How's that for some alliteration..

Without further adieu, the winner of the $50 giftcard raffle is: PUBSGAL! Isn't she going to be excited! You have a choice of Barnes and Noble and/or Dick's Sporting Goods, so let me know! I'll send you an email shortly.

Won't you consider helping me fight cancer by donating HERE? I'll even give you a present! Check out the necklaces you get and read about who I'm running for HERE!

I Thought We Had a Deal With The Squirrels

The Monday Project

This week's Monday Project was all about the "bank." Whatever happens when you get out there in your workouts and your training goes directly into the bank and you can use it and draw from it forevermore.

Training in the cold? Bank. Running in the rain? Bank. (And also 100% badass.) It's more than about burning calories. It's about building experiences. It prepares you for any adversities you may face in future training, exercises or on race day.

And boy did I add to my bank this week.
bikerepairshop
Here's my first bank.  I'm up there on the left with the baby blue bike jersey on. That bike that's upside down is mine.

Before I tell you what I'm doing here, here's a little backstory.

Over the weekend, I rode with my tri-group. We rode 13 miles and after that, I ran 4. (Lots for the bank!) As I was on the last 1/2 mile of my ride and almost to the car, on top of a bridge, I got a flat. I wasn't sure it was flat, but my tire sounded all funny and I coasted to my car where I discovered it was indeed flat. Good thing I made it to the car! I brought my bike home and changed the tire the night before the ride pictured above.

So during the ride in the picture, I didn't have a spare tube with me because I used it for my previous flat.

I also didn't know how to use my little cartridge thingy that blows air into the tire. But about 3 miles into this ride on Wednesday, I blew another flat (I'm good luck to have on a ride!) So there we were, sidelined as one of the girls who was like somone on a Nascar pit crew worked her magic on my bike (I borrowed a tube and some air from someone.) I found the culprit, a piece of glass in my tire, pulled it out, we got on our bikes and continued on.

About two miles later, we were slowing down near an intersection and a squirrel, as if out of nowhere, comes barreling into my bike.

I feel his fur on my leg, I start screaming, "WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON TODAYYYYY!!!!!" and my eyes are looking up and straight ahead because I'm afraid to look down and see what hath transpired and eventually I sense that the incident is over and I stop and with my eyes closed say, "I don't want to look, tell me what's down there." Because all I can think is that there is squirrel carnage and I'm scared and feel like I'm going to throw up.

That fur on my leg really freaked me out.

The girls tell me he went up and around my back tire, flew out and ran off. Oh thank God. I can't imagine what would have happened to my psyche had he not made it. And also if I had to clean up squirrel carnage. I would have had nightmares.

So I was a little shaken up and grossed out and kept feeling the phantom fur on my leg and thought maybe this ride wasn't for me and that no one was going to want to ride with me again. But we kept on.

Big, big, bank.

In hindsight and on a serious note, thank God I was able to think clearly during squirrel incident and just sort of stop pedaling and coast to a stop, because I could have had a serious crash if I had freaked out even just a little more. Thank God it was also not while we were flying down the trail, but when we were coasting to a stop.

Don't these squirrels look both ways before crossing?

All I can think of is that episode of Seinfeld where George hit the squirrel by accident and thought they had a deal: they see him coming, they move out of the way. Kind of like the pigeons, when he ran through them and trampled them (they were supposed to move, as per "the deal.")

On the way back from that ride, I heard squirrels chirping in the trees above me.

I know they were talking about me.

I could just feel it.

This week I've learned the following lessons:
-How to change a tire
-That I must learn how to use specific tire-changing equipment if I'm to change a tire or at least have someone with me who knows this very valuable information, as in this instance
-How to handle my life if I am hit by a squirrel (it was not the other way around)

We kept on and rode 17 miles that day.

So I can add that to my bank.

How bout you? What did you add this week? Link up with the other Monday Projects here!

Weigh-In Wednesday: The Spring Fling

Sisterhood Spring Fling Challenge

Have you been over to the Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans yet this morning? Its beautiful Spring-yness hath befallen upon my eyes, simultaneously soothing me and inspiring me with it's flowery goodness! Or rather, IT'S SO PRETTY!

Today's the start of a new challenge and it promises to recharge our inner batteries and help us fall in love with ourselves all over again!

And who doesn't want that? So join the challenge if you haven't already! We're doing teams this time around for some ultra-mega-support! I'm very excited and can't wait to meet my team. Are you on my team??

For the start of this challenge, I found that one pound again. You know the one. The one I keep gaining and losing over and over again? That one. He's laughing at me. Taunting me. Wagging his little tiny finger at me, telling me he'll be back over and over again as long as I keep ordering pizza at 10 at night the night before a weigh-in. Yes, true story. Husband's fault. He should be looking out for me.

I haven't been counting points. I am so hungry I want  to eat off my arm and I turn to the gorge-y type things, the kind that you can only get in a drive-through. And usually it's after I exercise. Because all of my workouts have stepped up about 10 notches. I'm riding longer and farther than I ever have before. I am doing bricks that include a 13 mile ride and a 4 mile run. I'm getting ready for this crazy triathlon in April and I really need to eat better than that. I am exercising like I am in training, but I need to eat like I am in training. For some reason, because I know I burned so many calories, I have been giving myself a license to eat anything I want! Which at a gaining-weight standpoint is ok, but in the end, it just ain't healthy.

So that's what I'm focusing on this challenge.

Speaking of challenges, I signed myself to do a crazy public fundraiser to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society where I shall embarrass myself in front of everyone -- I've been tweeting about it, but it truly panned out! These crazy people are letting me do it! I can't wait to post about it! Ps. Vote for what I'll do on race day, right there on my sidebar.

Happy weigh-in everyone and happy challenge!!

The Vote

I've told you I'm going to do something crazy when I meet my fundraising goal! Now it's time to vote!

I've put together a list of all the suggestions given to me, by you, and now you will get to tell me what to do. Here's your shot to embarrass me! I'll blog and vlog and take pictures of whatever it is that you force vote on for me to do. Just vote in the poll right there on the top left on my sidebar.

(Why is all of this again? Refresh me.)

OK. I'm running a half-marathon in June with Team Shrink and the girls at The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans. We are helping to fight cancer by raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I am running for a dear friend and co-worker of mine, Rose Astorina, who was diagnosed in 2007 with Non-Hodkins Lymphoma.
Now, I promise do my part by following through, but I have to make my fundraising goal to do it *hint hint*. And I'm just $120 away from drawing my the raffle which is a $50 gift card to Dick's Sporting Goods or Barnes and Noble winner's choice!

Also, if you donate, not only do you get an entry into the raffle, you get your choice of the following necklaces, I will send them to you. You can see them here:
Here is the list of necklaces to choose from:
Circle charms:
"Imagine"
"Passion"
"Strength"
"Focus"
"Courage"
"Discipline"
"Faith"
"Harmony"
"Power"
"Miracles"
"I Need More Cowbell"
"I Do All My Own Stunts"
"Be Yourself"'
Charms:
"Strength" - this one's a silver charm, not a circle
"Live Light" - also a charm, not a circle

Voting closes March 18th. Vote as much as you want until then! Have a great week!

Weigh-In Wednesday

Shrinking Jeans Olympics

Good morning! I am having the best time doing the Shrinking Jeans Olympics! For the span of the Winter Olympics, we have events going on every day (only these ones are doable -- no triple sow cow necessary or whatever that's called) at the Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans. You really gotta check it out here, and plus there are medals involved! Sort of.

Anyhoo, I'm down one pound this week. Which is amazing because I didn't count points this week thank Goodness I didn't say that out loud. I didn't eat perfectly but I have religiously worked out, even when I was left all alone home last week alone with two sick kids. I bought a bike trainer (I even vlogged one of the workouts but apparently the camera wasn't pointed up high enough, so it was 40 minutes of headless bike rider or riding torso, depending on whether you're cup half full or empty. And I rode my own bike inside the house every day that I couldn't get away to the gym. (LOVE!) I'll try the vlog again at some point too. But I actually don't remember when my last "day off" was. Which isn't good! We must take days off! I think mine will be Friday.

OH YES, AND HEY! I'M GIVING SOME STUFF AWAY!

tntstrengthI make these necklaces, it started out as a necessity because I couldn't find one that I could work out in that was short like a choker. So I bought the leather myself and started making them and I put affirmation rings on them ("Discipline," "Focus," "Courage," "Strength"- inspirational messages.) Of course, I also have silly ones (like the one I'm wearing), "I Need More Cowbell."

I opened up my own Etsy shop and started selling them and have had a great response!

Anyway, remember how I'm training for a half-marathon to fight cancer with the sisters of Shrinking Jeans? If you donate $20 or more (RIGHT HERE - and completely tax deductible), I'll send you a necklace of your choice (with a leather or satin cord, your choice.). If you donate less than that, I'll send you my silicone "Strength, Focus, Discipline" bracelet. (Picture of that is HERE.)
AND ANY DONATION WILL ENTER YOU INTO A RAFFLE FOR A $50 gift card to Dick's Sporting Goods or Barnes And Noble -- your choice.

So pretty please? I've only raised 1% so far. Don't you feel bad for me? I'm pathetic.

ps. I'm going to do something crazy when I reach my goal and I'm letting you vote on it starting next Monday!!
Have a great week! I hope you did wonderfully and I can't wait for the new challenge, I hear it's starting soon and it's really really cool!! Meantime make sure you go visit the rest of the sisters!

Weigh-In Wednesday: The Rethink My Shrink Finale

Rethink Your Shrink!

Wow, is it done already???  Rethink Your Shrink is done??
That went fast.

Well, I did pretty good, if only my anniversary weren't at the tail end of this challenge! An anniversary in which there was dinner and great steak and a piece of chocolate cake the size of my head.

I did lose for the challenge, though not as much as I had wanted. Looks like this week I lost a half a pound (wow is all I can say for that and that's in a good way.)

Total for the challenge: 4.5 pounds!

Which I think is pretty darned good and this challenge was exactly what I needed to get back on track after the holidays. And there are a lot of things going on that will keep me in check for the immediate future, like for instance I am officially participating in the Team Shrinking Jeans half-marathon in San Diego! I want you to meet the beautiful woman I am running for right HERE. I need to raise a lot of money to get there, any and everything counts! So I will be opening it up for a vote, if I meet my fundraising goals, I will let YOU vote on what kind of crazy I do. The options:
-Faux hawk
-Dye hair purple
-Eat mushrooms (GAH!)
-Get a tattoo (fake or real... hmmmm.)

I am taking suggestions for the list for the next week and a half that I'll add to the list, so suggest away! I will vlog whatever you decide I do. Voting will begin in a week and a half! Until then, won't you consider a donation?? To me or the team, either way is great!

In other health-related news, I got back from a weekend away with the husband (we went to Orlando, a theme park and dancing! Woohoo! Right up my alley!) We were on a wonderful we-love-our-relationship "high!"! And then the kids were sick (debbie downer.) 102.5 fever upon walking into my parents' door.

So we've been inside all week, sick. No school, no one can come over to watch them. My poor guys. Every week, I swear.

Because of days like these, I bought an indoor bike trainer to stick my bike on and ride away. Because I cannot swim or run while the kids are sick, I may as well do something! And I'm looking at 4-5 days of only weight-training and DVDs, and those options would be great if I weren't training for a triathlon! So I bit the bullet.

And IT.IS.AWESOME. I got my ride in yesterday! I rode for 30 minutes, I caught up on the Today Show while the kids napped, it was perfect! It was amazing! I wish it were a little quieter, but it didn't seem to bother them, so I guess it's fine! The great part is that I can set it up anywhere I want. If I want to go in the driveway and put my headphones on, I can do that. If I want to ride in front of the tv, I can do that. If I want to ride in the office, I can do that! And any time I want! On my own bike!

So awesome.

Not sure if I'll ever catch up on everything since we've been sick since December and I've been frazzled for the entire month, but right now I will drink coffee.

I can't wait for the new challenge, have you heard about it yet? The Shrinking Jeans Olympics? I know! It's awesome and I can't wait! By the way it starts in two days. Hope to see you there!

Weigh-In Wednesday: No Whammy No Whammy No Whammy...

I woke up with a migraine and my child as the devil incarnate.

And then the scale said I gained a pound.

(No whammy no whammy no whammy no whammy...)

Triple whammy!!

So right about now is that place called "Moment of Truth." The one where I would like to crawl back into bed and pull the covers over my head.

And evade the gym.

And stop counting my points.

But do I ? No. No I don't.

Because there are perfectly good explanations for what happened this morning. First (and because Weight Watchers told me when it noticed I gained a pound this week), weight-loss doesn't always happen on my time. Which kind of stinks, because, you know, we have this weigh-in on Wednesdays and all, and I'd really like the scale to reflect all my hard work in time for it thankyouverymuch. But this week it didn't. Even though, since last Wednesday, I have run 7 miles, done a Body Pump class, spin class, and swam twice. Obviously the exercise isn't a factor since there was exercise on 6 of the past 7 days. Training for Team Shrinking Jeans and the half-marathon in San Diego and my triathlon in April has officially begun! For the next three to six months, I will be working my tail off. No question about that. It's game on!

As far as eating goes, I am pretty sure I stayed within my points, but I went to a church retreat with my mom over the weekend and they fed us their own stuff and it was either eat that or starve. I am pretty sure I was able to count the points and even if I didn't, I earned 27 activity points and hadn't even touched them, so I would hope that even if I counted wrong, I had extra to spare.. but who knows? (I did ask God to help me count the points...) But who knows if I counted an egg souffle right? And well then, nature happened upon me yesterday... (you're welcome.) So it could be all of those reasons, or one of those reasons or none of those reasons and who knows, I could see a drop in the scale by tomorrow. We'll see.

So for today, my migraine medication is working. My kids are eating breakfast, which is defeating the hungermonster which is in turn restoring them (especially the one that was a complete lunatic 5 minutes ago) to their normal, even-keeled selves. And I'm going to move on. Because this is already turning out to be a better day, even if the first 20 minutes of it really stunk. And how can it not be a great day? I'm celebrating 5 years with my husband on Friday! And we're going away for the weekend! Woohoo! (That should be interesting for my points situation!!)

Chim chimney chim chimney chim chim cherooooooooooooooooooo!

Wow, it's the end of this post and things are already looking up! So if you've have had a rough go today like me, I promise it'll get better! Just keep on keepin on, cause we're in it together. And if you had a kickass day already, hurrah for you!!

So have a nice day! And get thee to a runnery!

I ROCK

Rethink Your Shrink, The Monday Project

Yes I do. For this week's Monday Project, I challenged us at the Sisterhood to come up with 5 ways that we rock.

I was actually surprised at how hard this was. I must've looked at the computer screen for 20 minutes before I actually started typing something. And even then, I deleted and typed and deleted again. But thankfully I was able to come up with something, and mine are here. And I'm going to follow Brooke's lead here, and ask you, whether or not you're a sister at Shrinking Jeans or not, to tell me, how do you rock?

Go ahead, toot your own horn! Because you rock. You know you do.

Weigh-In Wednesday: The "I'm Running a Marathon" Version

Sometimes when you feel like crap you just have to get out and pretend you don't. Like I am today. At Panera, by myself, with coffee. Don't worry, I'm in a corner keeping my germs to myself.

I'm going to do a "good news sandwich" here. Some good, followed by a little annoyance, followed by more good. So stay with me.

First, the good. The weigh-in at the Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans (Join yet? It's never too late!)I maintained this week! Woohoo! Which is fantastabulistic because honestly, I haven't gotten a workout in since Sunday and I'm not going to until my chest clears. I am all for working out with a headcold, I did it over the weekend and I felt fabulous afterward! FABULOUS! As in, I so didn't want to but did anyway and it was amazing. But when it moves down to the chest, it's a whole different ballgame. It's time to rest. Because it either is or will become an infection.

Sandwich meat. And I'm so sorry I'm the girl who's grumpy about being sick. No one wants to read about that, I know. That's pretty much why I haven't blogged. Because when I open up my computer, my head is all in a fog and all my inner monologue wants to do is curse. So I'll stop in a second with one last rant: AAH! I just can't seem to get over this thing, these spores, whatever they are! My skin hurts. I haven't been able to get a workout in this week yet. I feel like time is a-wasting away and that I'm good for nothing. I hate how time wasting being sick is and how useless as a human I am. Maybe I'm just annoyed because I can't get over this thing in a timely manner. Let's go, spores! We're on a schedule! We have a 20 mile bike ride on Saturday and a bike and a run on Sunday. I'll give you until Saturday and then that's it! M'kay?

OK I'm done. Last part of the sandwich. More good news. I am officially signed up for the Disney MARATHON next year. January 2011. I am running a marathon. Me.

I mentioned it to my husband earlier in the week. Last night, he looked over at me and asked me, "What size shirt?" I said "small." Me. A freakin' small. Holy crap that's awesome. I had a hunch he was signing us up and before he pressed confirm, he said, "Ok, this is it! Yes or no?" And I said yes. SQUEEE! This is it!

Why a marathon? After the half-marathon last year, which was so so long enough, I wasn't up for the marathon and I honestly felt like I pretty much never would be. I pushed the marathon to the back of my head because running 13.1 miles was so boring! And it hurt! And I really didn't see how I could keep my head busy during marathon training. Because really, my head is the most annoying place to be sometimes on long runs.

However, I've done a lot since last year's half. It's gone through a lot more (good) pain. And my body just has this way of deciding for me what's next. It's like I have no say whatsoever. I am doing a longer triathlon this year. I am doing another half-marathon in June (YAY, SISTERHOOD, YAY!) and the marathon is next January, which means that when triathlon season is over in October, I have nothing to do! So train for a marathon it is! And if I'm going to be stuck in my own head for 26.2 miles, why not be distracted by things like Mickey Mouse and Nemo and Lightning McQueen and Goofy and Donald Duck (ooh, shiny objects! pretty colors!) Yeah, it doesn't take much for my small mind. And I've heard some chatter from some girls in the Sisterhood about maybe? possibly? joining me next January, so if the marathon is indeed your "Holy Grail" as it is mine, won't you consider joining me? It's supposed to be a magical weekend. And if you don't believe me, read this race report from the Fit Bottomed Girls, who really just sealed the deal for me and completely inspired me. Picture a bunch of us girls piled up in hotel rooms (no one sleeps before a marathon anyway!) getting ready to run a marathon! There is also a half-marathon and a 5k if you don't want to do the full marathon! Just sayin.

So that's the short version of "I maintained." For every bad (like sickness) there's gotta be some good.

That's how I roll.

Friday

Hanging In There

Short and sweet today -- I am about to go on a cleaning frenzy like never before.

So that my house will be like it was before the spores entered it.

Sterilized. Disinfected. The totally aired out, windows open kind. With steam cleaning on the floors and carpets. The whole shabang. Even though I still feel like the crap. But the kids are better and they're in school and I have a window and it is small.

But last night, I spruced up my Wall of Motivation and I posted it over at my SJ Blog, so go take a look at it! And if you haven't joined The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans yet (first, why not!), we are doing a project this week and it's all about the Wall of Motivation, so check it out!
Happy Friday!

Weigh-In Wednesday: Body Fail and the Frog

Rethink Your Shrink!

It's weigh-in time over at The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans! (Have you joined yet? It's never too late!)

This week, I am down one pound. It was kind of a rough week with working out because I was taking care of all the sickies, but I did make sure to eat ok so that it would all be ok when I got back into the gym which was Monday.

Also I learned something about myself. I learned that there is an ab exercise called the "Frog" in which I have complete body fail.

You sit on your butt. You lift your legs and bend your knees and pull them up toward your chest. Meantime, you keep your entire torso off the ground so that your body is sort of shaped like a "V" and you're just balancing on that tiny piece of butt. and then you bring your arms and knees together repeatedly. Which would be great except that I can't even get my body to do the position in the first place! My lower abs are almost non-existent! Thank goodness I took this class! I had no idea they were this weak! I MUST CONQUER THIS THING THEY CALL THE FROG!

If you got a second, try it. I'm going to keep trying. This is why I took that crazy body pump class and why I keep going. Because I went into complete body fail the first week, and then the second week, it was a little better. (Not the Frog, just the class itself. I went into body fail during other parts too, like 1:30 of planks and inverted planks --this lady kicks my rear!) I think I might keep going because I love the weight training/cardio combo and the pain I leave in (I can hardly turn the steering wheel, my arms are so shaky and sore. They're actually still sore.)

I'll just keep repeating Pain is good. Pain is good. Pain is good.

Right?

Happy W-I-W!

The Me Project

Rethink Your Shrink, The Monday Project

Last Monday, we started something fittingly called "The Monday Project" at The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans. (I've heard some sisters calling it "homework" but I'd like to refer to it as a project... haha!) Anyhoo. It's part of the new "Rethink Your Shrink" challenge where I am challenging everyone to get all introspective on themselves, recognize patterns and obstacles to living a healthy lifestyle, and henceforth go forward to grab life by the, um, HORNS.

We link up our projects on Fridays and can I just say, what an amazing experience this has been so far!

If you want to read a little more about the project, click here. And if you want to read my story, click here.

Have a great weekend everyone! If you want to participate, it's never too late! You can still link up your story at the Sisterhood! And yep! There will be a new project on Monday!

Weigh-In Wednesday at the Sisterhood

Rethink Your Shrink!

Good morning! It's a beautiful day for a weigh-in don't you think?? It's week one of the "Rethink Your Shrink" challenge at The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans! (Have you joined yet? It's never too late!) We are literally changing from the inside out. Each week there is a project, and the projects help us define ourselves, reward ourselves, but most of all, put us on the path toward loving ourselves.

I had a great first week of the New Year. Well, all except for the stomach virus thing we all had. I'm going to pretend that that's NOT how the rest of 2010 will be for me.

Anyhoo, sadly, stomach viruses are always pretty good when it comes to weight loss. I'd like to think that it was because of all the work I did, though. No fast food, my treats were of the Skinny Cow variety, and lots and lots of working out. My hamstrings are still on fire from a Body Pump class I took on Monday night (not to mention the last chance Biggest Loser workout April put us through on Twitter during commercials last night!)

Anyway, grand total: -2.5.

Sweet! I'll take it.

I am sure that some of last week's "cleansing" aided this process, but who am I to scoff?

Go weigh in at The Sisterhood! Then go visit all the sisters, we all need support! Plus who doesn't love a comment?? Happy New Year everyone!

Weigh-In Wednesday and Finding Balance

I claim victory today!

No, no loss to report. But, what with a husband birthday and a trip to MickeyWorld and all, I do have to say no gain is good news! Especially because it wasn't a good exercise week for me with everything going on. I did some exercise, just not what I usually do. So I'm cool with no gain, no loss. In fact, if I gain zero throughout this holiday season, I will claim victory on the holiday season. I've decided for the next couple weeks, I am not looking to lose as much as I'm not looking to gain.

Does that make sense?

Have you read this post yet? This post really resonated with me. Because I so equate indulgent food as "bad" and have for so long, I haven't been able to develop a guilt-free relationship with it. It doesn't matter if I just let some so-called "naughty food" graze my lips, the guilt overwhelms me and I talk about it the next day.

But no food has to be a bad food.

Because actually (and as I tell my son when he asks me, "Mommy, is this helfy?"), anything you have too much of can be unhealthy.

Which is why finding the balance is important. And making healthy choices at home and even making some heathier choices out there in the world all makes a difference. Because you pick yes for this and no for that and hopefully you have found a good balance in it all. Like when I was a total loser as a mother and forgot to pack snacks in the bag to Disney and we were trying to get in at one of the restaurants for breakfast with the characters (which was a buffet) but we had to wait until 9 which meant the kids hadn't had a thing until after 9 a.m. because Mommy didn't even have just a little something for them for before then (we're 7 a.m. breakfast eaters!)

So I wandered around and found a little souvenier shop tucked away outside the Disney gates and I bought mickey-shaped cookies (like the Disney version of animal crackers) and a big bag of dried apricots.

Guess which one my son chose?

The apricots. Surprised even me! He tore them up! And by the way, I had an even bigger revelation about my son's food choices and I'm posting about that separately (with pictures).

So during this season, at home, we will be as healthy as we can. I've made a huge batch of my low-fat muffins that everyone loves for snacks and breakfasts, and I make healthy dinners and lunches. So that away from home, I can (and will) indulge -- like when we go back to Disney on Friday and when I take my mother to tea on Saturday, without guilt. Because of the balance.

I do begin training in January officially in which my goals will be to firm up and lose bodyfat (not necessarily weight), and build my endurance. But for now, my goal is to make it through the holiday season at the same weight, happy, and guilt-free.

How did you do? Weigh in over at the Sisterhood! And if you haven't joined us in our quest for a healthier life, please do!

Weigh In Wednesday: The Post Gobbler

This was a wake-up call for me.

I scared myself.

I could actually feel myself on the path to whence I have come from. After all the Thanksgivingness/slash/birthday partiesandcake, my results from this past week are:

The same. No gain, no loss.

Whew. That was close. Because it was up a few last weekend.

By Monday, my body was in dire need of a green bean. Or anything remotely happy and healthy. And it feels so much better to be eating well again. I ate these for breakfast. I'm still working on the workout part, throwing in makeshift workouts here and there because I don't have an organized plan yet (I really should just stop complaining about that and make my own, shouldn't I?)

I did get the actual Olympic-distance tri-workout plan from my trigroup and I about pooed my pants. The very first week has a person swimming 2300 meters. I swim just around 1,000. Good thing the plan doesn't start officially for a few weeks still (actually almost two months!) Because I have a lot of work to do before then. And each workout is actually two workouts. So that 2300 meter workout is actually paired up with a 30 minute run or hour-long bike ride. Or an hour-long or 90 minute bike ride is paired up with a run.

The workouts are long. And there are 5 of these a week.

What have I gotten myself into?

Guess 2010 is going to be my thinnest! Because I don't see how I can do that much working out and have any flab left! Can't wait to get started, I am pretty sure my wall of motivation is going to be quite full in the coming months!

Still a little scared, but I've been in this place before and have come out ok in the end.

How did you do this week? I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Go check in at the Sisterhood! And ps. If you don't know what I'm talking about, head over there, it's an awesome place to share to find motivation and support in your health endeavors!!
